Maurizio Vecchione, Founder & Chairman

Maurizio is a seasoned executive with more than 25 years of CEO level experience in healthcare, the Internet and high technology. He founded Synthetica in 1996 in response of what he perceived to be a need for small, high growth companies to access strategic expertise and alternatives to equity capital in the high technology market. Since then he built the firms presence in biotech, healthcare, and the internet and the manufacturing sector.   He is widely published and an accomplished public speaker and has a strong track record of operational and financial planning and management, and of significant shareholder value creation. During his career he has been directly responsible for over $1B in shareholder value, which has included multiple initial public offerings, many private equity transactions and multiple mergers and acquisition transactions in both private and public entities. Maurizio was an internet pioneer, having participated directly in the early development of the world wide web and later founding ModaCAD (later StyleClick), which pioneered electronic commerce technologies online and as well as online graphics technologies used today throughout social media and on-line games. ModaCAD became one of world's largest application services provider at the time and Maurizio orchestrated both its initial public offering and later its sale as a public company to InterActive, (then USA Network) for a transaction valued at over $500M. Maurizio was also responsible for ModaCAD's close joint relationship with Intel where they worked together in the development of the early emergence of the Internet and the use of advanced computer graphics on PC platforms and the Internet. Maurizio’s later focus has been in healthcare and life sciences with a special emphasis on new methods of healthcare delivery and new drug development using imaging, the internet and other emerging technologies.  He was a pioneer of the use of advanced technology in transforming healthcare delivery, he has focused on the use of telemedicine, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as well as personalized medicine as enablers of high-efficiency healthcare. He was also involved in the creation of tele-phathology and imaging biomarker pioneer Trestle Holdings, a Company he eventually sold to Clarient. He is currently the CEO of CompuMed a cardiology telemedicine leader. He is also a member of the founding team of Arrogene, a nanotechnology bio-medicine company developing targeting platforms for cancer treatment and a spin-out of Cedar Sinai Medical Center. In the course of his activities he has been featured in the press, has lobbied members of Congress, worked closely with the Federal Communication Commissions (FCC), the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institute of Health (NIH). Maurizio is trained as a scientist and has significant experience working with organizations engaged in research and development, adding business, financial and operational skills to those organizations. Three of his most recent companies were spin-outs of major research universities. He also has a depth of regulatory experience and has  provided leadership in early stage organizations that might need compliance with regulatory agencies as well as sponsors (grant-supported) and related reporting. During his tenure as a CEO he has managed full FDA GMP, GLP compliance, FDA New Drug Applications and 510(k) submissions. Maurizio’s career has been highlighted by twice been a finalist for E&Y’s prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year award, he has received the prestigious DEMO award and has been an invited speaker at the TED conference, where he has passionately evangelized the impact of new technologies in healthcare and in clinical research. He is also an expert consultant for the Ghearson Lehman Group, providing expert advice to investment professionals in healthcare, lifesciences and internet new media. Maurizio is a member of the IEEE and the ACM. 

David Altshuler, ESQ Corporate Counsel

David has broad experience in a variety of practice areas, and services a diverse group of of industries.  David has expertise in many practice areas that are important to businesses, including but not limited to corporate finance, mergers and acquistions, real estate transactions, intellectual property, the Internet and information technology, taxation, trusts and estates, entertainment, media and communications.

John Maarten

John is Synthetica's CFO  responsible for internal financial management, the firm's compliance as well as a member of the investment committee. He has 15 years of experience in corporate debt services industry, origination and syndication with bank and private lenders, including at Fortress Capital and at JP Morgan Chase. 

Dean Johnston, Global Markets North America

Dean heads business development for Synthetica in North America and is a Sr. Practice leader in our management consulting operation. He has spent the last 22 years in sr. management as an executive and as an investment banker. He has been an advisor to medium and small high technology companies in the internet, healthcare, wireless and software industries. He was previously with McKesson in the pharmaceutical practice and with McKinsey & Co. as a turn-around specialist. Dean is a specialist in complex operational and supply chain related operations and has extensive experience dealing with complex business life cycles. He also has extensive distribution experience both in North America and in Asia. 

Mark Applegate, Global Markets Europe

Mark leads Synthetica's management consulting effort in Europe. With a background in banking inclusive of 6 years of investment banking experience with ING Baring and 10 years in professional services with Ernst & Young, Mark combines knowledge of the capital markets with expertise in complex corporate transactions such as M&A, recaps and spin-outs. He also has expertise in the unique challenges of European distribution and cross-border transactions. 

Xiaoli Ping, Head of Global Markets Asia

Xiaoli heads Synthetica's Asia Pacific group out of our Honk Kong office. Xiaoli has 12 years of experience dealing with complex high technology manufacturing and distribution throughout the Asian market. She was previously involved with building Sony's presence in China, and later she was an executive at China Mobile. Xiaoli manages our client's strategic joint ventures and partnering in Asia and has experience dealing with OEM, distribution and joint venturing throughout the main Asian marketplaces. 

Andrea Vecchione

Andrea is Synthetica's EVP and was a co-founder of the firm with her husband. Andrea is in charge of loan origination for the firm and also manages the firm's media and entertainment practice. Andrea has a 15 year career in the film and entertainment industry previously to joining Synthetica.
